A fatal railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the rapidity and handling of the country's flagship infrastructure initiatives.
The crash took place on the Interoceanic Train, a rail link constructed to link the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was designed to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.
“We shall thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this accident,” stated the country's president.
The leader announced that, of the around 250 individuals on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in serious condition. The official stated plans to go to Oaxaca to confer with those involved.
Flagship Project of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a central infrastructure project of the previous administration, whose time in office concluded the year before. This venture was a hallmark of his administration's strategic vision for the southeastern region.
Another massive rail project from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the comprehensive effort to stimulate the economic fortunes of a historically less developed part of the country.

The development of both rail lines was managed by the armed forces, marking a notable growth of its responsibilities in national infrastructure. They were completed at an fast-tracked rate, beating predictions to be at least partly opened before the end of that government.
However, this rushed timetable had also fueled significant apprehensions over safety standards.
