‘Online Monitoring’: Unilever Seeks to Capitalise On Vaseline’s Viral TikTok Trend.
Originally found more than 150 years ago on a Pennsylvania oilfield, the humble pot of Vaseline might not appear as an natural focus for online content feeds.
However, its rise as a viral TikTok topic has thrust it into the lead of an advertising revolution, where major corporations are investing heavily in content creators and devoting less capital to promoting products in conventional outlets.
From Oil Rigs to Online Hacks
First created commercially in the 1870s by a chemist, Robert Cheeseborough, who observed drillers rubbing their skin with a residue from oil extraction. Now, a flood of user-generated videos have recorded its extensive utilization in “life hacks”.
Promoted as a remedy for cleaning shoes or extending perfume longevity, and also a remedy for creaky hinges. Its use has even extended to prevent the annoyance of chip seasoning clinging to fingers.
Harnessing the Hype
Detecting the product’s new life online, strategists within the corporation boosted the tips by asking their own scientists to test them and letting the content creators in on the results.
Claims that Vaseline reduced the sting of chili on the mouth were validated. Similarly supported were ideas it could extend fragrance and rejuvenate purses. Suggestions it could brighten smiles or extend lashes were debunked.
A Plan Built on ‘Social Listening’
Outdoor advertising and television commercials would once have dominated Unilever’s advertising drive. However, this online trend has persuaded leaders to ramp up funding for content creators.
This observation of social channels to inform business strategy has been termed “social listening”. Fernando Fernández, freshly instated, has indicated the goal is to spend 50% of its massive marketing spend on platform-based material.
Adapting to New Consumer Habits
Selina Sykes, who is heading the digital initiative, said the company was merely adjusting to novel methods of reaching consumers. She said interacting online “without dampening the fun” was crucial.
“What is the key to genuine brand integration? This has perpetually been our aim as brands, since the era of community gossip and discussing household products.
“We are witnessing a departure from a broadcast model, where we would just broadcast out … Today, it's numerous dialogues, diverse communities. The evolution of platform algorithms means that these audiences appear specific, yet they are vast.
“If you can make sure your brand is shared by consumers, mentioned by individuals, that is how you can build trust and relevance. Content makers are key. We’re really scaling this advocacy model.”
A Revolutionary Change in Media
The approach indicates dramatic transformations happening in audience habits, with younger consumers spending more time on social media platforms than traditional TV, print, or radio.
The transition is visible in falling revenues for broadcast and newspaper ads. Across Britain, commercial funding for major broadcasters have declined by over six hundred million pounds in inflation-adjusted terms since 2019.
Influencer Marketing Expansion
Additionally, it points to a media convergence as large companies almost become production houses themselves, linking up with numerous influencers to promote their goods.
A commercial director at a major talent agency said: “Clearly, there is a migration of viewers from conventional channels and they’re spending a lot more time on social platforms like Instagram, TikTok and YouTube than they are watching live TV or reading print.
“Many companies report to us consumers have more faith in suggestions from the personalities they subscribe to compared to commercial messages. This is a persistent pattern.”
He said brands could also save money by focusing on influencers over big traditional media campaigns, which also enables easier content adjustment to see what works.
The approach is growing. Marketing investment on influencer marketing is rising at quadruple the rate than the media industry overall. Stateside, it has over doubled since 2021 and is projected to reach tens of billions in 2025.
Traditional Media's Continued Place
Even with this transformation, industry figures said they believed TV advertising still had a prominent role to play, as broadcasters retained the power to shape the national conversation.
The executive noted: “Among the most effective advertising investments is still major broadcast spectacles. The issue isn't broadcasters claiming: ‘We are no longer pertinent.’ It concerns who commands eyeballs … I think there’s 100% a place for them.”
