One two-month cruise around the Australian Coast was terminated following the death of an older woman who was abandoned by the ship on a distant tropical isle.

The elderly woman had been hiking on the remote island with shipmates from the cruise ship, but parted ways from the group for a pause. The vessel departed without her and went back later that day after the crew realised the lady was not present.

An extensive rescue mission located her body the subsequent day.

Officials are examining the incident, in coordination with investigators and the official investigator.

Chief Executive of the cruise operator stated that passengers and staff on the Coral Adventurer were notified that the remainder of the journey had been cancelled due to the "sad loss and earlier technical problems".

In a statement, he mentioned that guests would be given a full refund, and said the operator was working "to organize the travel back of the individuals via private aircraft".

Authorities also issued an updated communication, and said they had "delivered a directive to the Captain" prohibiting any additional guests from entering the vessel.

The official said that they would attend the liner in Cairns upon its coming back.

Sequence of Events

The ship first departed the Australian port on the 24th of October, and was merely two days into the expedition at the time of the senior passenger's passing. The tropical location was the opening port on the journey.

Travelers on the vessel - who typically pay tens of thousands of dollars to participate in the voyage - were taken there for a shore visit with the choice of hiking or snorkelling.

Relatives Response

The daughter of the victim said that her relatives was "surprised and saddened that the ship left the location after an scheduled tour without my mother".

In her statement, she described her mum as an "vigorous 80-year-old" who was a participant of a hiking organization.

"From the little information we have been told, it appears that there was a breakdown of care and ordinary reasoning," she stated.

She further stated that she hoped the investigation would be able to pinpoint what "the operator should have undertaken that might have preserved Mum's life".

"According to reports from the investigators that it was a very hot afternoon, and mother fell ill on the uphill trek," she revealed.

"Officials suggested her to go back, without accompaniment. Then the boat sailed away, seemingly without conducting a roll call.

"At some stage in that chain of events, or shortly after, she died, alone."

Organization Position

In a statement, the CEO confirmed that the company was "cooperating fully with officials to support their inquiry".

He stated that the firm was "extremely apologetic that this has happened" and had extended its total backing to the loved ones.

Cruise Industry Procedures

The ship serves up to a hundred twenty guests with 46 personnel, according to company details. It was specifically designed to reach remote areas of Australia's coast and is fitted with "auxiliary vessels" - minor craft used to ferry passengers on land visits.

Occurrences like this are rare, and passenger vessels have systems to track which passengers are boarding or getting off, according to travel authorities.

"Leaving covertly or [back] onboard really isn't an option," one expert remarked.

Shipping companies consider these processes extremely carefully and have "advanced technology in place to avoid such incidents from happening," the expert added.

"This is presumably a stunning - and tragic - one-off."
