The artist has handed over the entirety of his £25k award prize money to the trust for venues, which functions to save the Britain's independent live music spots.

Fender was awarded the prize on mid-October as his latest record his work was chosen as the top album of the last 12 months.

Fender has decided to hand the money over to the Music Venues Trust, in acknowledgment of the essential function local spots had in his beginning days.

"I personally couldn't be pursuing my current career if it weren't for all the shows I performed around the area, and further afield, when I was just getting going," said Fender. "These spaces are renowned, but they are in difficulty."

Beginning in 2023, over 150 of these spaces have shut down – roughly one-sixth of the entire UK sector.

In the last year, major artists such as the band Pulp, the group Coldplay, Katy Perry and Ed Sheeran have all backed the Music Venues Trust in its efforts to keep the scene afloat, by applying a small levy to their admission fees, which goes to help independent venues.

Sam Fender also participated, collecting over £100k on his 2024 arena tour to assist thirty-eight small stages across England, Scotland, and Wales.

These funds helped spaces that were dealing with imminent closure due to issues arising from floods, fires and bereavements, as well as licensing issues, legal disputes and neighbor objections.

Some locations were granted monetary aid in modernizing facilities and sound and lighting systems that positively impacted performers and fans.

"The notion that funds from performances in large arenas helps the smaller venues, where it begins for musicians like me, is just common sense," the star has stated.

The musician is far from the only musician to give his Mercury Prize prize money to good deeds.

When Pulp won the award in 1996 for their record Different Class, vocalist Cocker declared that the band would donate their prize money to the organization War Child.

During 2002, rapper and singer Ms Dynamite divided her bounty across multiple organizations, like the NSPCC and a Sickle Cell charity.

"And I donated a £1,000 to Highgate Newtown, to their gymnastics class, because I practiced gymnastics when I was younger and they needed updated gear," Ms Dynamite shared with the media.

In recent years, the band contributed their winnings to the youth organization that nurtured their group, in addition to other grassroots music organisations.

Also 1994 winners M People contributed their award to a multiple sclerosis charity after a friend was found to have the condition.

"Receiving the award was ample," remarked artist the singer. "The cash was the bonus but we didn't require the cherry, because we had the cake. So our success affected the lives of others."

In the past week, the Music Venues Trust announced it had protected two local spots in that region, by transferring them to community ownership.

One venue in that area and The Croft in that location were bought under the public acquisition initiative, which is supported by the arts council and supporters who buy "ownership units" in the venues.
